Story by Colton O’Reilly
When I get in my car to go to work in the morning, I look forward to two things: hearing the BBC news at 8:00 a.m. sharp, and listening to soothing driving music right after to enjoy on my short commute. This has become somewhat of a tradition for me as it sets my days off on such a good note.
The mighty radio is permanently camped out on 90.9 FM and has been since 1985. It also makes a great selection for your number one save slot in your vehicle.
If you were to tune in between the dates of Oct. 19 to 26, you may hear the lovely music programmers talking about the 2018 CJSW Funding Drive. This fundraising event is what allows CJSW to stand out as much as it does amongst the top campus radio stations in Canada. With the support of Calgarians and music lovers from all over, CJSW has been able to: increase its stations power from 4,000 to 18,000 watts in 2012, create a snazzy, new website in 2013, open a new all-ages venue downtown (McHugh House, 2016), and many, many more amazing projects.
Please donate what you can to support this mighty cause. Pledged incentives include: CJSW Friends Card, cozy, knitted toque, large hot chocolate mug, classy t-shirt, super soft sweater, and a uniquely amazing jar radio. You do not want to miss out!
You can donate online and select your favourite shows to pledge to. Some notable favourites are Freshly Squeezed, Off The Map, and Knotted Roots. All three of these shows have hardworking, dedicated, and incredibly kind hosts, not to mention their dope tastes in music!
Freshly Squeezed always comes on for my drive home around 5 p.m. and my main squeeze Jamal is always spinning the freshest hip hop, with a hint of zesty R&B. Then there is the always-positive, ever-supportive Kendra from Off The Map. Her eclectic mix of folk, blues, rock, indie, and all those other genres we tend to love astounds me every show, not to mention all the talented new bands she brings on for live sessions – so good. Last, but absolutely not least, the legendary, the soul king, the dopest dope DJ there ever was: Stefan of Knotted Roots. He has gone above and beyond with his friendship and support of the local music scene and knows how to pull at the heart-strings with his soulful and expressive compendium of music.
The mighty fine people that all give their time and efforts towards this lovely radio station truly deserve recognition. They not only hold such a high standard for quality of radio, but are kind and compassionate people who are all making a huge impact on this city.
Please support local music; please support local radio.
