Calgary Folk Music Festival’s fourth annual Block Heater

Words by Sara Kuefler

With the frigid temperatures that have been locked in for the past couple weeks, many of us have made good use of our vehicle’s block heaters. Just as the recent cold snap begins to release slightly, we will be able to look forward to a much more exciting type of “Block Heater”.  The fourth installment of Calgary Folk Festival’s Block Heater music festival, presented by ATB, occurs February 21 – 23, 2019 and features 28 musical acts spread over four venues, including Studio Bell, Festival Hall, The New Central Library, and The King Eddy.

The lineup for this year is an eclectic mix of artists from as near as our own fair city to as far away as Ireland.  Patrons will have the opportunity to take in music as diverse as folk, alt-country, rock, blues, hip hop and more, in languages including Spanish and Inuktitut. Many of the artists fuse multiple genres in their sound, which is fitting for an event such as Block Heater, as, in the Folk Festival way, collaborative sessions form a significant part of the schedule.

Head to their website to plan out your Thursday through Saturday. With chances to catch Lucky Sonne, Ghostkeeper, Carter Felker, The Mariachi Ghost, Cartel Madras, Shaye Zadravec and more, there is potential for a busy but very fulfilling weekend of music. Should you miss a chance to see an artist you want to catch, be sure to take a second look at the schedule as many acts have more than one performance. For those who would like to expose their little ones to some quality tunes and the festival community, ATB is hosting a free street party Saturday outside the St. Louis, from 12 – 10 p.m. and children 12 and under are free for ticketed performances.
